What Does "All Inclusive" Mean?

Are you looking to get the best value for your meeting, conference or incentive program event? Would you like to pay one price up front and then not have to worry about every little expense or negotiating several different food and beverage contracts, etc? If so, then an all inclusive resort is for you. It is important however, to know exactly what the term "all inclusive" means?

When referring to all inclusive, the following would typically be covered with the cost of your event: accommodations, hotel taxes and fees, meals and snacks, beverages including alcohol, activities and entertainment, gratuities, and sometimes transfers to and from the airport. Additional services and amenities may be included and varies by resort. Generally, depending on the size of the group, meeting space is provided and certain group functions will be given. AV equipment is almost always an added expense so it may be worthwhile to consider bringing your own LCD Projector, etc.


Typically, the following items are included:    
  • Please note - the level and quality of these items varies depending on the category of property you select such as 5 star luxury versus 3 star mass market.
  • Your selected rooms, plus taxes and fees are generally included up front.
  • At least three meals daily. This could mean a buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or there could be a variety of a la carte options included. For instance, some resorts, such as Karisma Hotels, focus on gourmet a la carte dining. At some all inclusives, the majority of meals are buffet-style. This is usually reserved for the budget-oriented resort. Be sure to do your research if cuisine is of a major concern especially if there are dietary restrictions or concerns as this may require special negotiation.. In addition, most all inclusives provide a beach grill or some type of late-night dining, or you can just order a meal from room service and have it delivered straight to your room. Suffice it to say, you will not go hungry at an all inclusive resort.
  • Beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic).  The higher-rated resorts will provide premium international drinks from well-known brands, while the entry-level all inclusive may just provide domestic brands native to the destination. The mid-range all inclusives typically offer a mix of international beverages along with domestic types.
  • Daily activities and nightly entertainment. The inclusions vary from resort to resort, but you can be sure there will be plenty to do.
  • Gratuities (tips). Tips are not required at the overwhelming majority of resorts, since it is included in the price you pay up front. You do have the option of providing extra to those resort workers that go out of their way to serve you exceptionally well.  However, but that is totally up to you. Be aware, depending on where you go some resort chains have a strict "no tipping" policy.
  • Airport transfers. Some resorts provide transfers to and from the airport while other all inclusive packages have the transfers added into the total price.
  • Extras. Some resorts may provide extras like golf greens fees, spa services, motorized watersports, scuba dives, in-room WiFi, etc. This can vary by resort or by chain. If you pay for a more luxurious or upscale resort, you may find more included than if you are at a budget-minded resort. Extras that are typically not included tend to be things like laundry services, babysitting, spa services, excursions away from the resort, meeting facilities, etc.
These are just the main items that are included with your all inclusive price. Keep in mind that package inclusions vary by resort and may include restrictions not mentioned here.
